Course Title: Business Communication

Course Objective: The course is designed to help the students in learning the basic concepts and techniques of business communication and acquiring the skills needed to communicate effectively in management. The course provides a thorough understanding of the communication process and dynamics in business settings and emphasizes written as well verbal communication. Various techniques of effective communication through business letters, reports and other media form an integral part of the course.

1.  Meaning, Features, Objectives, Importance, Flows and Communication process.

2. Barriers, Principles and Steps to effective Communication.

3. Verbal and Non-verbal communication.

4. Use of English

5. Fundamentals of Business Writings

6. Fundamentals of Business Letters

7. Categories of business letters, Letter of Confirmation, Acknowledgement, Enquiry, Circulars and Sales letters Complaint, Adjustment, and Collection Letters.

8. Job Letters: Curriculum vitae, Cover letter, interview, References, Offer of employment, Job description, Letter of acceptance, Letter of resignation and Testimonial.

9. Internal Communication: Memorandum, Circular, Office Order.

10. Reports: Meaning and Types of report, Format of Formal report, Formal reports and Informal reports, Covering memo.

11. Meetings: Meetings in business, Types of meeting, Notice and agenda, Drafting Chairman’s agenda, Minutes of meeting.

12. Persuasive Communication: Circulars and Sales Letters.

13. Techniques of Cross-Cultural Communication

Class lecture, participative discussion, assignment and class presentation would be used as means of teaching and learning methods.

Evaluation Method:

The performance of the students will be evaluated on a continuous basis using the following method:

Class Participation : 10%

Quiz /Class Test /Case Study/ Assignment/ Presentation: 10%

Final Examination: 80%

Total: 100%
