UGC introduces two mandatory courses in all universities. Two courses- History of the emergence of independent Bangladesh and Bangla Language and Literature, have been included in all universities from this year. University Grants Commission (UGC) had discussed the matter in its 144th commission meeting on June 9, 2016. In that meeting, a decision was taken to make two courses- History of the emergence of independent Bangladesh, and Bangla Language and Literature – mandatory in every department of all universities across the country.
 
Karman and Maguire also talked to around 12 Rohingya women who are victims of sexual and gender-based violence. The Nobel Laureates visiting the no man’s land between Myanmar’s Tambru and Bangladesh’s Konapara border areas have asked the refugees not to hesitate to call themselves Rohingya. Mairead Maguire of Northern Ireland and Tawakkol Karman of Yemen visited the no man’s land around 10:25am on 27.02.2018. Around 700,000 Rohingyas entered Bangladesh since August 2017, fleeing the Myanmar military’s oppression termed as “ethnic cleansing” by the UN. During their visit, the laureates spoke to the Rohingyas living in the area.
 
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) has approved 15 projects involving an estimated cost of Tk17,987.23 crore. The approval came from the 18th Ecnec meeting of the current fiscal year, held at the NEC conference room with Ecnec Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Tuesday. Of the 15 projects, 13 are new and two are revised ones.

Myanmar has bulldozed the remains of Rohingya villages to make way for refugee resettlement, not to destroy evidence of atrocities, an official leading reconstruction effort in the troubled northern state of Rakhine said on Monday. Last week, New York-based Human Rights Watch said it had analysed satellite imagery showing Myanmar had flattened at least 55 villages in Rakhine, including two that appeared to be intact before heavy machinery arrived.
 
Four people were killed in an explosion and fire at a three-storey building in the central English city of Leicester, police said on Monday 26.02.18. “At this stage, there are four confirmed fatalities and four people remain in hospital, one with serious injuries,” Leicestershire police said in a statement about the blast on Sunday evening. Officers said there was no indication the explosion was related to terrorism but the cause had yet to be determined. 
 
A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Papua New Guinea’s energy-rich interior on Monday, causing landslides, damaging buildings and closing oil and gas operations. The tremor hit in the rugged, heavily forested Southern Highlands about 560 km northwest of the capital, Port Moresby, at around 3:45am local time, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
 
More than 100 girls are reported missing after a Boko Haram school attack in northeast Nigeria this week that President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday called a “national disaster”. But locals in the remote town of Dapchi, in Yobe state, said they had been left vulnerable to attack because soldiers had been withdrawn in the last few weeks. Nigeria’s government has been scrambling to contain a growing crisis that has revived memories of the 2014 mass abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok that shocked the world.
 
The Bangladesh Public Service Commission or BPSC has published the results of the preliminary examination of the 38th edition of Bangladesh Civil Service or BCS. A total of 16,286 job-seekers have qualified for written tests. A total of 288,899 candidates took the preliminary examination for. The commission will appoint 2,024 public servants, including 300 posts in the administration and 100 in police, through the 38th BCS.
 
Hajj pilgrimage for Bangladeshis will be more expensive than before as the Cabinet has approved the draft Hajj Packages 2018, raising the cost by around Tk 12,000 to Tk 16,000 in two government-supervised packages. Package-1 under government supervision would cost Tk 397,929 which was Tk 381,508 last year - a rise of Tk 16,421. Hajj Package-2 under government management would cost Tk 331,359 this year, which was Tk 319,355, marking an increase of Tk 12,004. The private minimum Hajj package has been fixed at Tk 168,277 which was Tk 156,537 last year.
 
Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque has laid the foundation stone for the construction of a Shaheed Minar at the Zuiderpark in The Hague. The Bangladesh embassy says the International Mother Language Day was observed on Feb 21, but before that, the foreign secretary laid the foundation stone of the first-ever Shaheed Minar on Feb 19. The Hague municipality has agreed to let Bangladesh build a permanent language monument in the city. Last year, the municipality allocated a land in Zuiderpark - the heritage park of The Hague.
